Google's Pixel 6 Pro feels every bit as premium as it looks

In recent years, phone manufacturers have shifted away from producing handsets with broad appeal. Instead, there is a greater emphasis on designing phones for specific consumers and groups. Gaming phones are designed for gamers. Sony redesigned the Xperia series to appeal to photographers, filmmakers, and creative people by providing high-end hardware and software that enhances the experience of snapping a photo or recording a movie. Microsoft unveiled the Surface Duo, which has a split screen for improved productivity. Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei are all making progress with foldable phones and software.

According to the World Health Organization, more than one billion people worldwide are disabled. That equates to 15% of the world's population. Currently, Apple and Google have pledged to make their operating systems more accessible to persons with disabilities.

"Over the last two years, we focused on developing features such as: Live Transcribe, which was built for people who are deaf and hard-of-hearing; Live Caption on Chrome and Android, which allows people to watch video and listen to audio content from across the web using AI; and a new improved Talkback (Android's screen reader), which allows people who are blind or low-vision to navigate their phones," says Angana Ghosh, the product lead for Android Accessibility.

Enhancements to accessibility may take numerous forms. Phones will be able to better accurately translate and forecast languages. Phones and software will be designed to be more inclusive of people of all languages, disabilities, genders, and ethnic origins.

Some of this might be seen in 2021, when Google opted to fix its camera's prejudice towards people with darker complexion tones. Google worked with a number of directors, photographers, and cinematographers known for their beautiful depictions of communities of color to assist the engineers behind the cameras and software in improving how photos of people with darker complexions are captured and presented for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
