Ralf Ragnick has been in charge of the team on an interim basis since November but United are yet to decide ole Gunner solskjaer’s long-term replacement.
Given the uncertainty at the top at Old Trafford, United opted against making any January signings as they could not be sure how new players would fit in under the new regime.
So while almost all of Manchester United’s Premier League rivals announced new arrivals, the Red Devils kept their power completely dry in a January window for the first time since 2019.United were not short of options last month, with Fabrizo Romano claiming that three players – Julian Alvarez, Denis Zakaria and Boubacar Kamara – were offered to the Premier League giants.
It is claimed that United were offered the chance to sign Argentina striker Alvarez ‘many times’ but the club had no interest in bringing a new striker to the Theatre of Dreams.
Alvarez subsequently signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with United’s rivals Manchester City but will remain on loan at River Plate until the end of the season. The Italian journalist also says Manchester United opted against a move for Switzerland international Zakaria despite being in contact with the player’s agent since December.
The Red Devils would have considered reviving their interest in the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder this summer but he completed a move to Juventus on deadline day.
Another possibility towards the end of the window was Marseille star and Barcelona target Kamara but United again decided against a move, not knowing whether it would be money well spent given their next manager is yet to be confirmed.
Rangnick’s Manchester United are fourth in the Premier League with 16 league matches remaining and face Championship side Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Friday.
