Isoken is a Must-Watch for all Rom-com Fans.

"Isoken" is a 2017 Nollywood film directed by Jadesola Osiberu.

Dakore Akande portrays "Isoken," a 34-year-old single woman with a great media career. She’s giving ‘Girlboss’. But, Isoken is under pressure to find her Mr. Right shortly after her two younger sisters, Nene (Bolanle Olukanni) and Osato (Jemima Osunde), get married. Her mother (Tina Mba) is the saltiest motivating factor behind the criticism and ridicule she faces from her immediate environment. Our protagonist, Isoken is introduced at her sister's wedding. We watch her welcoming and serving guests in an attempt to make them feel comfortable. The whole family is in attendance. Matching in pink, they all showed out. All the aunties that carried her when she was small were probably there too. Of course the “Your Own Will Come Soon” association had to spread their bad vibes!! It wouldn’t be a Nigerian wedding without them. Now, enter boo number one. Mama Isoken introduces our girl to Osaze (Joseph Benjamin). It's clear that they have feelings for each other. Osaze is wealthy and attractive. He is a bachelor from a well- known Bini family. As a result, he's ideal "marriage material.” The pair hit it off and decide to go on a date.

Cut to Isoken and her friends Joke (Damilola Adegbite), Kukua (Lydia Forson), and Agnes (Funke Akindele) spilling the tea on their love lives. Her girls eventually start telling her how she needs to "wear something sexy" and "do something to her hair," and she resists, insisting that "It's not her,” but our babe eventually gives in and agrees to 'do something' to her afro. After Agnes explains, 'no one is themselves on the first date,' she also throws out her loose 'boho-chic' outfit. She eventually does what she is told and looks stunning in a form-fitting gown and a wig. Let it be known that her pre 'makeover' outfit was a serve too. Osaze, like every lagos man, treats their first date like a job interview. He goes on and on about how he assisted his bank in making millions of dollars in a year. He asks the tired question, "Why is a girl like you still single?" and his sickening follow-up is, "Or were you too busy building a career?” God Abeg… They eventually laugh it off, and the two share a kiss. Can’t be me sha. They appear to be a 'good match', for now. Let's move on to lover number two. Isoken runs into the charming and hilarious Kevin (Marc Rhys) at the laundry mart on a random day. Now get this; Baby-girl accidentally leaves her undies in the drier. He calmly approaches her while she’s packing up her things and he returns the panties folded in a towel… The Secondhand Embarrassment… Isoken gathers her clothes in the same bag as her shame and just dips. Then, this part kills me, Kevin overhears her complaining to her friend about the experience. She becomes irritated after more awkward discussion and leaves in anger. Now, the coincidence of Isoken’s universe though. As fate or the scriptwriters would have it, Kevin turns out to be a photojournalist with the Associated Press. He shows up at her employment days later, and he walks in on her itching her head under her wig. Sigh... It at least serves as win interesting conversation starter. The two talk more and while looking around her office Kevin spots a CD. Turns out he knows the artiste and the guy in question was conveniently having a show that night. How smooth. They eventually agree to go out together and the pair end up having a blast. Isoken's universe makes it easy for her to juggle two men. Are you Team Saze or Team Kevin? Is she going to get with the ‘ideal guy’ or go for her foreign lover? The movie makers help you decide with the most obvious montage ever. She is quiet and impressionable while she is with Saze, and she lives in luxury. She is more herself with Kevin and ironically embraces more African art, culture, and music with the ‘oyibo'. This goes on for a while before the two intersect at Isoken's surprise birthday bash. Osaze pops the question during the party. Kevin sees the entire room persuading her to say yes. So they just assume she’s down to marry Saze. It gets really sad here. As time passes we can see wedding plans are in the works, and it's evident that Isoken isn't pleased. There’s this one scene where our babe has the cutest bantu knots in but Saze’s mother calls her a ‘Rural Girl’ (and that was her ‘putting it nicely’ ..yikes). And another instance where she breaks down in front of her dad (Patrick Doyle) and its just really sad. At Joke's child's naming ceremony, she bumps into Kevin. He makes the most heartfelt plea to Isoken, begging him not to marry Saze. He goes on and on about how much he loves the little things about her; from her stubbornness to the cute way her chin moves when she smiles. He then kisses her before he leaves. God When?.. In true Rom-Com fashion, Our main lady waits until the eve of her engagement dinner to call things off with Saze. He is obviously pissed at this point and so is everyone else. Mama Isoken is especially salty towards her so of course they call family meeting on her head. During this, Isoken has had enough. She makes this feisty speech about how she just wanted to make her mother proud of her for once but she’s fed up. She says “I’m going to find Kevin, and I’m going to tell him that I love him. So if you ever want to see your grandkids, you better get on board.” All, and I mean ALL her family members present follow her to go find Kevin. It was a jeep but I still don’t know how all of them were able to fit in. And of course her mom came too. She had to finally support her daughter because there was less than 30 minutes left of the film. And they all lived happily ever after. We leave the ensemble of characters at Chuks and Kukua’s wedding (don’t ask, it’s a secondary plot line) and they all seem to be doing well. Overall Jadesola Osiberu stunned with her debut feature film. The majority of the actors in the picture are outstanding. The conversation in the film is particularly amusing. The film as a whole treated many themes of feminism, courageousness and 'coming of age at any age’. Presenting these topics in an entertaining and relatable way leaves viewers satisfied.
