Well, not exactly… Although it is one of his lesser known projects, Weird City still deserves its flowers.
‘WEIRD CITY’ POSTER/ SOURCE: IMDB.COM
Weird City is a humorous, whimsical picture of the future in which society is divided between the tech elite and legacy civilization by a wall known as The Line. It's similar to Black Mirror in that it explores the darker side of technology, the things that go wrong, but it's done more hilariously than tragically in this series. It's essentially Black Mirror's amusing relative.
Jordan Peele and "Key and Peele" writer Charlie Sanders co-created the quirky comedy, which has a loaded cast but is still stuck on YouTube Premium (though the first two episodes are available to stream for free).
It's the type of program that can only exist when there are so many alternatives to choose from, but it's also the kind of show that can be lost in the mix, regardless of value.
The YouTube original series, set in the "not-too-distant future," revolves around a city split by a border wall that separates the affluent and poor. The "Haves" live "Above the Line," in a clean, busy metropolis full with modern technology and numerous options. The "Have Nots" dwell "Below the Line," on the other side of the wall, where cheap beer and late-night eateries abound, but money is scarce. Citizens with the correct paperwork can travel between planets, although the quality of living varies greatly.
Each episode tells a new tale, yet some characters, such as LeVar Burton's enigmatic mad scientist, who may or may not be pulling all the strings, appear throughout. This "one and done" approach allows "Weird City" to recruit larger personalities who would not have had the opportunity to spend a whole season Above or Below the Line, such as Dylan O'Brien, Rosario Dawson, Ed O'Neill, and Awkwafina.
Episode 1- The One
While living above the line, Stu (Dylan O'Brien) was born below it, and so never had a love partner allocated to him at birth. Burt (Ed O'Neill) is his match after using a dating site that claims to identify perfect mates. Friendship rapidly blossoms into romance between the two guys despite the fact that they are both heterosexual and a substantial age gap. After a year, Dr.Negari (LeVar Burton), the originator of the dating service, assigns them new companions and informs them that their match was created in error. They are forced to split ways. As a means of preserving their relationship, Stu and Burt decide to relocate Below The Line together.
Episode 2- A Family
Failure Tawny (Michael Cera) attends ShapeCult gym expecting to find the acceptance he so desperately needs after being kicked out of his Pomegranate Electrolyte Juice addiction support group and fired from his job. Delt, his personal trainer at the gym, finds himself at odds with him because of his insane desire for acceptance (Rosario Dawson).
Episode 3- Go To College
At Above the Line, high school valedictorian Rayna (Auli'i Cravalho) finds that life is very different from what she's used to. In particular, when it comes to dating and intimacy, where sexting is the most common means of communication
Episode 4- Smart House
Mark Hamill provides the voice for the Smart House that a couple, Liquia and Jathryn (Laverne Cox and Sara Gilbert), have their hearts set on buying. Because of this, the home turns on them, endangering their romance and perhaps causing them to die. Whether or if they'll be able to outwit their own smart house is the question.
Episode 5- Chonathan & Mulia & Barsley & Phephanie
When Gillian Jacobs, Hannah Simone, Malcolm Barrett, and Steven Yeun decide to sponsor a needy Below the Line child, they vow to do more than merely send money.. They snatch him from the street.
Episode 6- Below
Yvette Nicole Brown (Yvette Nicole Brown) and Awkwafina ("Awkwafina") realize that they are not the criminals they believe themselves to be, but rather, extras in a television program that airs in Weird City. Discovering their presence causes them to reassess everything in their lives.
