Love is the essence of Christmas and Christmas is best celebrated by taking quality time with your family and friends and cherishing and celebrating the love you share. And what other way to celebrate than over a meal of delicious rice with wine, sharing love and food to anyone and everyone one comes across.
As the yuletide season beckons shopping starts for both gifts and foodstuffs. Here are a few meals that are not so popular on normal days but are made for celebrations like weddings, namings, thanksgiving, send forth, and Christmas.
1. Fried rice
This is a meal filled with vegetables like carrot, spring onions, runner beans, green peas, sweet corn. This rice is fried first, and the depth of its taste comes from the curry, thyme, and seasoning. It is usually combined with Moi-Moi or Coslow and of course, the protein which is according to the
preference of the person cooking or the ones eating. Fried rice is highly nutritious but however goes bad very quickly, to preserve it the remainder could be refrigerated, and it won’t lose its taste.
2. Chicken/ Turkey
During the festive season prices of these birds skyrocket because sellers know it is in high demand and that is what will be in most foods. They are used as the source of protein in meals. Chicken helps to build stronger muscles and healthier bodies. It also treats Anemia and protects eyesight. Turkey is rich in protein and is an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals, especially B vitamins. It strengthens the immune system and boosts metabolism.
3. Goat meat
This is mostly used to make Asun (peppered goat meat). It is not uncommon for some homes to use this protein instead of the usual Chicken for their Christmas meals. It is rich in dietary potassium and has a role in stabilizing heart rhythms. It also helps in regulating blood pressure and reduces the chances of developing pulmonary hypertension. So, this has also been used with Christmas meals.
4. Wine
This is fermented grape juice which could be red, white, sparkling, and is used as a beverage with meals. There are both alcoholic and non-alcoholic wines and either can be taken according to the preference of those eating. It is not advisable to drink wine on an empty stomach.
5. Gingerbread
Although this might not be so common in Nigeria. Ginger is a spice that is used to make a number of Christmas goodies, like gingerbread man cookies, gingerbread house, etc. It is usually found in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is a source of sodium that will regulate body function as well as balance the hormone levels in the body.
